PlL In Supreme Court Seeks To Direct Centre To Reconsider ‘Agnipath’ Recruitment Scheme.

Written By- Pretika Tiwari

Harsh Ajay Singh v UOI

Advocate Harsh Ajay Singh has filed a writ petition before the Supreme Court contending that the announcement of the Agnipath scheme has caused nation-wide unrest, leading to protests in the States of Bihar, Haryana, Telangana, UP, Uttarakhand, West Bengal and many other states. These protests have occurred due to the short-term duration of the scheme and the future uncertainties of the trained Agniveers. In his plea, Singh also claims that when the Agniveers finish their four-year term in the prime of their youth, they will not have developed enough to maintain self-discipline and the knowledge that they must become a better version of themselves both professionally and personally. For the following reasons, Singh has sought a stay in the implementation of the scheme from June 24, 2022.

The petition filed through Advocate Kumud Lata Das states that there are high chances for the Agniveers trained under the scheme to go awry. The petition said, “nation should never compromise with the army personnels, making up the fighting sinews of its armed forces. They shouldn’t be looked upon as a burden to the exchequer, but as rough diamonds, to be cut and polished to their maximum capabilities and then deployed in the defence of the nation.”

However, a plea had already been filed before the Hon’ble Supreme Court challenging the Centre’s Agnipath recruitment scheme. A PIL has also been filed that favoured the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to look into the large protests against the Centre’s “Agnipath” recruiting scheme, which resulted in mass rioting and destruction to public property, including that of railways.
