Written By – Arshita Anand

A writ case, Sikander Behl vs Union of India has been filed in the Supreme Court, asking for a stay on the distribution of the film “Why I Killed Gandhi,” which is slated to premiere on the OTT platform “Limelight” on January 30th, Mahatma Gandhi’s death anniversary.

Mr. Sikarndar Behl has filed a writ petition through Advocate Anuj Bhandari.

The petitioner claims that if the film’s publication and screening are not halted, it will irreversibly destroy the image of the Father of the Nation and generate public turmoil, hostility, and disharmony. The petitioner claims that the film is intended to cause communal strife, disseminate hatred, and disrupt tranquilly.

The Petitioner is also seeking adequate regulation of the OTT platforms, as he is enraged by the fact that the movies are being released and shown for public viewing on OTT platforms without any restriction, regulation, or censure.

According to the petition, the film “Why I Killed Gandhi” is an attempt to smear Mahatma Gandhi’s reputation and glorify his assassin Nathuram Godse.

According to the petitioner, an attempt is made in the movie’s 2 minute 20 second teaser to blame Mahatma Gandhi for the partition of India and crimes against Hindus in Pakistan, and so an attempt is made to justify Mahatma Gandhi’s death. According to the petitioner, the film has not been cleared by the CBFC and is in the process of being released.
