The union cabinet cleared the proposal for one nation, one election on 18 September 2024.

Four former CJIs have backed the proposal.

They were consulted by the Former President of India, Ram Nath Kovind-led committee working on the proposal of “One Nation One Election”

Former CJIs, Dipak Misra Ranjan Gogoi, S.A Bobde, and UU Lalit were consulted.

The union minister, Ashiwini Vaishnav, considered holding the polls simultaneously throughout the country, a significant step.

The first phase of the elections will cover the Lok sabha and assembly elections, and the second phase will cover the local body elections.

Former CJI Ranjan Gogoi highlighted the advantages of one nation and one election, like cost efficiency, enhanced voter engagement, and much more.

Former CJI, S.A Bobde, had already cleared in February that the concerns regarding the basic structure are misplaced.

In totality, 12 judges were consulted during the process, out of which 9 judges supported the idea, but 3 of them expressed concerns.
