Every lawyer should be mandated by the BCI to take up at least one pro bono case a year: Parliamentary Panel

The parliamentary panel on Wednesday said that it must be enabled by the Bar Council of India that every lawyer must appear in at least one pro bono work in a year so that he can secure the relief fund from the All India or the State Bar Council.

The panel related to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Personnel, Public Grievance, law, and Justice tabled its 143^rd report in which it said that the advocates in the district courts, high courts, and the supreme court can involve themselves in the pro bono work by rotation and the same can be monitored by the bar association.

It also said that the senior advocates in their respective courts must form panels to take up pro bono works.

It was also suggested that the advocates be given merit certificates depending on their contributions.

Also, the National Legal Services Authority must give compensation to the lawyers adequately so that they can sustain themselves and keep their motivation intact.

The panel was chaired by Sushil Kumar Modi.
