Recently, Punjab and Haryana high court sought state’s response on alleged panchayat resolution barring migrant labourers from UP to reside in a village named Mundho Sangtian.
As per the live law report, The court was hearing a PIL filed by Advocate Vaibhav Vats seeking direction against the alleged actions of the gram panchayat claiming it to be arbitrary and unlawful.
“arbitrary and unlawful actions of the gram panchayat of Mundho Sangtian village, Tehsil Kharar, District S.A.S. Nagar, which passed a resolution barring migrant labourers from residing in the village, using common resources, and accessing local shops” the plea stated.
The petitioner claimed that about 300 migrants from UP face racial and social discrimination violating their rights under articles 14, 19 and 21 of the constitution of India.
The petitioner further relied on a news article published by News18, which stated “The proposal prohibits local villagers from offering accommodation to migrants and plans to halt the issuance of any future identity cards for migrants within the village.”
The court noted the petitioner’s submissions and asked the Punjab government counsel to file response to the above-matter concerned.
The matter has been listed to August 22.
