What’s The Action Plan Against Sexual Crimes on Trains and Stations? : Allahabad HC Questions Railway Ministry

The Allahabad High Court has directed the Union Railways Ministry to provide details of specific measures taken to prevent sexual crimes against women on running trains and at railway stations.

The court was hearing suo motu public interest litigation (PIL) initiated in 2016 after a woman was gang-raped on a moving train. Justices Attau Rahman Masoodi and Brij Raj Singh asked the Railway Ministry authorities to respond on the steps taken by them to curb such incidents.

The court directed the Ministry of Railways, Government of India, along with a copy of the order passed by this Court on June 19, 2016, to show cause as to what measures have been taken by the Ministry to curb such incidents.

The victim in the Mau rape case has received ₹2,81,000 so far as compensation out of an amount of ₹3,75,000 earmarked as compensation.

The Mau rape occurred in September 2016, when a woman was thrown out of a moving train in the Mau district of Uttar Pradesh after being gang-raped. The High Court took note of similar incidents and issued certain directions to the government of India and the Ministry of Railways while hearing one such case in 2013.

The matter will be taken up next on March 4.
