Droupadi Murmu has taken the Oath of Office as the First Tribal President of India in a historic moment.

As of 10.15 am today morning, Droupadi Murmu has been sworn in as the 15th President of India. The first president of India of tribal origins and the second female president in the history of the country, Murmu took the Oath of Office in the Central Hall of Parliament in New Delhi by the Chief Justice of India N.V. Ramana.

Hailing from the Santhal community in Odisha, Droupadi Murmu has served as the Governor of Jharkhand and was declared the victor of the President Elections of 2022 on July 21, against the opposition candidate, Mr. Yashwant Sinha, to become the First Citizen of India.

The new president was escorted to the Oath taking Ceremony by the out-going president Ram Nath Kovind, Vice-President Venkaiah Naidu, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, and the Chief Justice of India N.V. Ramana.

Following her oath, President Murmu made her first speech as the head of state, wherein she promised her support to the youth and talked about the need to empower women in fields dominated by men.

Home Minister, Amit Shah praised her remarkable journey from a disadvantaged and poverty-stricken tribal area to becoming the President of India. He marked this appointment of this exceptional tribal woman as the head of state as a historical moment. He opined that her election to the office proves the ruling government’s commitment to the empowerment of the state.

Prime Minister Modi referred to her election as a Watershed Moment.
